Ground spider Drassodes lapidosus
This fierce nocturnal hunter is a close relative of Scotophaeus blackwalli that is found in homes where it hunts insects and other spiders. Like its indoor cousin, Drassodes lives hidden away in a silken cell during daytime.
They prefer to live under bark and beneath stones and can often be found in the indentation ('frog') of up-turned house-bricks and under stones in garden rockeries, etc. These spiders owe their common name to the drab colour of the abdomen. They are, like their house cousins, fierce hunters, coming out at night in search of prey and hiding away during daylight hours.
