Microwhip Scorpions (Palpigradi)

These are tiny blind arachnids with a whip-like extension to the opisthosoma, the flagellum. They inhabit leaf litter, soil, moss as well as beneath bark and stones in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate regions of the World. The chelicerae are large and well formed. Pedipalps are used as if they were a pair of legs, whilst the first pair of legs is not used for walking but are sensory and function as antennae. Being small and having a thin cuticle means that a respiratory system is not required.
